Linn-Mar Student Wins 2019 MVS Agriculture Award at Invent Iowa CompetitionApril 17, 2019 On April 15, 2019, I had the pleasure of attending the Invent Iowa 2019 Competition. Invent Iowa is hosted annually by the Belin-Blank Center of the University of Iowa’s College of Education. Invent Iowa is a competition which allows students K-8 to pitch a three-minute presentation about their inventions to volunteer judges and other students, followed by a two-minute question and answer session. This year’s competition had over 100 students compete for various awards. MVS is a proud sponsor of the competition and awards the MVS Agriculture Award to the student who presents the most creative invention related to the agricultural sciences. Please join us in congratulating our 2019 MVS Agriculture Award winner, Manasvi Devi-Reddy! Devi-Reddy is a 4th grade student from Eastern Iowa. She won the award for inventing the “Environmental Saver.” The Environmental Saver improves upon a method which uses farming by-products normally discarded or thrown away, such as parts of corn-stalks, to make paper. Devi-Reddy recognized these by-products can also be mixed with other compounds, such as paste, to form new combinations. She then formed the resulting combinations into other useful items, such as kitchenware. Devi-Reddy was inspired to create the invention while helping her grandmother around the house. She believes her invention will further help prevent deforestation and create less waste.
