Bush proposes 8% increase in USPTO funding for fiscal 2008February 6, 2007

In his proposed budget released on Monday, President Bush proposed $1.9 billion in funding for the USPTO in fiscal year 2008. In addition to this amount, USPTO fees would also not be diverted to cover other government programs, instead permitting the USPTO to use the full amount of collected fees for operating expenses, including hiring and training additional examiners. If approved, the budget would likely result in a net increase of about 800 examiners in 2008 (1200 new hires with 400 lost). This will hopefully advance the PTO’s goal of reducing the pendency of applications, as well as give the PTO the opportunity to provide additional training for its examiners with the hope of increasing patent quality.
